“Declaring public institutions that receive government funding as ‘gun-free zones’ violates the Constitution and puts everybody in danger by ensuring that only people intent on doing harm have a weapon.”

I’m no constitutional lawyer, so I cannot address the first part of that statement. I completely agree with the second half, though. If I am a law-abiding, rational individual then why shouldn’t I be able to carry a gun? Personally, I have no desire to lug around a 9mm, and I’ve never felt enough in danger to want to do so. That doesn’t mean that I shouldn’t be able to, just because it’s unnecessary.

Florida’s gun laws are pretty lax, but fairly stringent when compared to the rest of the deep south. Considering that Tallahassee is still run by the “good ol’ boy” elite and not the northern transplants from Tampa and Miami, it’s possible that this issue may receive a look from the legislature. I think the VT tragedy hurts gun-rights advocates more than it helps, and even if there was a will to change the law, now would be the absolute worst time to do so.
